With the constant closures caused by the corona virus pandemic, countless students across the country were probably breathing a sigh of relief when many colleges announced a temporary pause in standardized test requirements for college admission. Celebration might be short-lived, however, as students are discovering that standardized testing is still required for many other aspects of the college application process.
For example, many college athletic prospects will still need to take standardized tests to qualify and compete for the limited spaces available on most teams. There are simply too many athletic prospects, and coaches are using standardized tests as a tool to pick out more competitive students.
Test scores are also being used to qualify not only athletes but non athletes for academic scholarships. Students who need scholarship money to afford college will likely need strong test scores in order to qualify. Some scholarships even have different tiers of monetary awards based on score performance.
25 states in the country also require students to take the SAT at least once during their high school years as part of a graduation requirement.
So as tempting as it is to celebrate having fewer tests in their future, the majority of students planning to attend college still have pressing reasons to sign up for an SAT or ACT and put some time and effort into achieving the best possible scores.
